When my brother and I were little boys, our grandfather used to take us out on his bass fishing boat at various lakes, and we would go fishing. My grandfather would tell some of the most interesting stories we had ever heard, and we would always have a cooler packed with sodas, juices and snacks. We would sit out there for hours, and eventually my brother or I would catch a fish, and my grandfather would always make such a big deal out of it. We had some very good memories on that boat.
One of the biggest thrills that I got on the bass fishing boat was actually sailing over a school of bass, and hearing the little signal letting us know that we were right on top of them. I would always hurry to get my fishing rod ready, and my grandfather would kind of chuckle at my determination. I still did not have much luck catching any bass when I was a young boy, but as I got older, I started to reel them in more and more. Pretty soon, my brother and I were catching more bass than our grandfather, a fact that did not seem to bother him one bit!
My grandfather taught us how to gut, clean and filet the fish on his bass fishing boat, and he would often have a grill right out on the boat for us to cook them up. Maybe it was the way that he seasoned them or the pride that I felt in catching them, but they always seemed to taste best when they were cooked right out on the boat. My brother was not the biggest fish fan, so I would usually eat his as well. We would talk about the day as we ate, and our grandfather would tell jokes and make my brother and I laugh.
He would dock his big bass fishing boat and show my brother and I how to break everything down and care for all of our equipment, including our rods and reels and tackle boxes. He used to tell us that we had to make sure that everything stayed clean and in good repair, so that we could use it as long as we needed. It was a lesson that stuck with me to this day, because even with my office equipment, it is clean and well cared-for and everything operates perfectly.
My grandfather's bass fishing boat provided a lot of good memories for me and my brother. We will still talk about it to this day how much we loved being out on it. Our grandfather passed away this past year, and his boat was long since sold to a friend, but his memory lives on for my brother and I with all those great fishing trips we had together.
