Baby Health Insurance Advice for Mothers-To-Be

When you have a child on the way, among all the different things that you need to do prepare for the event, you really do need to make sure to set time aside to look into arranging for baby health insurance – insurance that protects you and your baby in the event of unexpected problems that might occur when you go in for your delivery.

So what exactly do you need to do to make this happen? It all starts with pre-authorizing your delivery. You need to make sure that the hospital (and even the obstetrician who will specifically work with you at the hospital), are on your insurance company's network. What happens if you don't pre-authorize?

If the doctor is an in-network one, then he takes care of all the preauthorization for you. If the doctor himself isn't on your insurer's network list, it is your responsibility to get approval for everything from the doctor to the hospital. Your health insurance identification card will probably list the preauthorization phone numbers. You need to pay attention to all of these things as part of your baby health insurance roll.

There is such a thing as a pre-admission process at any hospital. This is where you fill out a bunch of forms about all your insurance coverage details, and the hospital makes sure that everything checks out. You need to be very careful about filling everything out correctly. If there are are going to be problems, the hospital will contact you and tell you to take them up with your insurer.

You need to do more than to simply make sure who the obstetrician is. If you plan to have a painless delivery, you need to make arrangements with the hospital for an anesthesiologist. And of course, this professional needs to be on your insurer's network. If it turns out that he isn't, this one professional alone could cost you thousands of dollars. You can't assume just because you go to an in network hospital that everyone in the hospital is on the network too.

And then, finally, comes the actual baby health insurance. Once your baby is born, you need to not waste a second and rush to enrol him in your plan.
You have a 30 day window only. Many parents make the mistake of telling themselves that they'll just go home and have everything settle down before they turn their attention to this piece of paperwork. You don't want to give the insurance company a chance to get away with anything. If your insurance comes to you through your employer, you need to notify your employer and make sure that the human resources department does what's necessary.
