The Best Organic Flea Control Method

Fleas can be such a dangerous nuisance. They can srive any cat or dog to desperation, and then they can drive them to ill health too. Pet owners don't have to deal with them personally, but they have read those EPA warnings that say that hundreds of cats and small dogs die every year from toxic shock, having had flea control medication applied to them. The alternative, as most people are realizing now, is to look for organic flea control.

When you buy regular, chemical-based flea prevention medications, they tend to primarily use a chemical ingredient called permethrin to keep those fleas away. This of course, is a dangerous substance. You have an alternative to go to though, for organic flea control. The substance, they call pyrethrin. As similar-sounding as it is to the poisonous chemical above, this material is obtained from much nicer sources – it comes from chrysanthemums. Diatomaceous earth is considered pretty effective, too.

You can buy diatomaceous earth at any pet store or gardening supplies store. It's a fine powder. When you apply it to a dog's coat, the fine powder sticks to the fleas, and it completely draws all their moisture out. No small insect can take that, and it dies. It's an organic flea control solution.

Diatomaceous earth though, only works when your dog actually has a pest problem. If you are a believer in preventive action, you should probably go with a natural organic repellent. You may not believe it, but the very smell of lemons and oranges is anathema to fleas. All you need to do is to squeeze a couple of lemons into a bucket of water and give your dog a new good wash with it. Not only is it great for your dog's skin, it's great as a way to get rid of fleas, too. Fleas just can't stand citrus.

There are other herbs that you could use on your dog's coat that fleas can't stand to. You could try Rosemary or wormwood or a number of other herbs.

Fleas hate lemon certainly, but they hate garlic to. You could in fact put a little garlic in your dog's food, when the garlic comes out in your dog's sweat, the fleas are just going to bolt.

You need to remember that a clean home and a clean dog to stand a better chance of staying clear of fleas. If you and your dog could work at keeping everything clean, you would find that it's about the best organic free control method possible.
