When I was a youngster, I was absolutely in love with the game of baseball. As I have grown up, nothing has changed, except for what I typically collect these days. When I was a little boy, baseball cards were the thing to buy, and I probably had at least 10,000 at one point in my young life. As I have gotten older, however, baseball collectibles have become more important to me, and even though I know they will probably never be worth a boat load of money, they are still special to me.
I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and one of the biggest figures in sports right now in the area is the manager of the Texas Rangers, Ron Washington. The other night at the ball park, they had a Ron Washington bobble head night, where the first 20,000 fans got a Ron Washington bobble head doll. I was not able to make it out to the game, but this was one of those baseball collectibles that I just knew I had to have as soon as I saw it, so I went to Ebay to see how much they were going for. The cheapest one that I saw was $20, and I went ahead and bought it. It was money well spent.
Among my favorite baseball collectibles was a book that I received from my father about Brooks Robinson. The book itself was not valuable, except for the fact that it was signed by the great Orioles third basemen himself! My father had gone to the old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore and had it signed after he had read it. He passed it down to me, and it is one of those baseball collectibles that I will never let go of. When the time comes, I will pass it down to my own son, and tell him all about Brooks.
I also have a program that was passed down from my great-grandfather, who lived in Cincinnati at the time of famous Black Sox scandal back in 1919. This was when the Chicago White Sox allegedly threw the World Series after accepting money from gamblers to do so. The team they played was Cincinnati, and my great-grandfather went to one of those games. I think what makes it so special to me is that it came from within my own family, and was not something I had to buy.
Baseball collectibles abound in my house, and fortunately for my wife, I keep them all in my study. I have a lot of stuff that takes up a lot of space, but it is all very special to me and something that I feel keeps my interest in the sport constantly piqued!
